What is an endocrinologist?

An endocrinologist is a medical specialist that specialises in the treatment of hormone related disorders such as diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorder and osteoporosis. Hormones are chemical messengers in the body that are created in the endocrine glands. Hormones control most major bodily functions, from simple basic needs like hunger to complex systems like reproduction, emotions and mood.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that only happens during pregnancy and generally goes away after the baby is born. Your obstetrician/GP and Dr Chan will work closely together to monitor your blood sugar levels throughout your pregnancy.

Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is a condition that affects the body’s ability to use the energy found in food. Type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent) is when the pancreas stops making insulin. Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent) is when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin for the body’s need thus not working effectively.

Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions — increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels — that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Obesity

Obesity is a complex disorder involving an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity isn't just a cosmetic concern. It increases your risk of diseases and health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is the most common endocrine disorder in women aged between 14 and 44 which can cause irregular or no periods, acne, hair growth issues and infertility. PCOS is also associated with metabolic conditions including insulin resistance.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a common medical condition in which individuals have reduced bone density and are at an increased risk of fractures. Bone density can be screened by a DEXA scan.

Thyroid disorders

Thyroid hormones are responsible for the rate our bodies burn energy. Over or under-activity can lead to various symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes and changes in mood. Blood tests can be used to detect thyroid disorders.
